— PRESS STATEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE —
NOVEMBER 15, 2010
Parti Keadilan Rakyat (KEADILAN) welcomes the long overdue release of Burma’s top pro-democracy leader, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, calling it a first step forward in turning on the heat for Burma’s real political freedom.
KEADILAN leader Anwar Ibrahim, and Party President Dr. Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, joins the chorus of world leaders and democracy activists in welcoming the release of Aung San Suu Kyi and expressed hopes that her release will be free of any kind of binding conditions, allowing her to embrace her freedom to movement, expression and association without risk.
Dr. Wan Azizah described joy and relief at her release and called her a “truly inspiring freedom fighter that will keep the flames of freedom alive ”.
“Despite the chilling stillness in the air following the military’s landslide victory in last week’s elections, designed to entrench military rule even further, the release of the pro-democracy leader and Nobel Laureate, must set in motion the immediate and unconditional release of more than 2100 political prisoners, and for the freeing up democratic space in Burma” added Anwar Ibrahim, KEADILAN leader who himself was jailed for six years over trumped up charges of corruption and sodomy.
While we welcome her release from house arrest, the truth is she continues to remain a prisoner in her own country. With her party outlawed, and her release strategized to ensure that she was unable to participate in the recent elections, no one really knows what will hold out for her and what will come next for the people of Burma.
What remains clear is for world leaders to turn up the heat on real political change in Burma.
